Sucht und Ordnung N°5: Zambia

“Instead of military service the state should send every young adult to a Third World country for a year to make ends meet without a credit card. I believe that this would change the attitude of humanity a lot.” It was something like that the ethnologist told me with whom I was in Zambia among other countries to do research for his radio features. These photos were taken during my most formative journey under very uncomfortable conditions. At that time, still immature, I complained often about bugs, hygiene, little food, long marches in the wet-dry tropical climate, the nerve-racking serenity of the locals in sudden-onset – bad for me – changes… As romantic as nature films depicted the people, their rituals and ways of life, as hard hit me reality: not least because of my own arrogance. These days I remember this horrible-wonderful journey and wish I could start on it again with dignity.
